I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 9th July, submitting further representations in support of your application for an increase of pension.
I am directed to inform you that the Secretary of State is willing to advance you the sum of £500 until such time as your pension is adjusted.
I am sorry to have to say that I still consider you are not worthy of its equivalent, which without exaggerating is about what it was at the present time, and which is the minimum now on which a person owing to my circumstances could exist owing to the general increase in the cost of living of about 200% which has reduced the purchasing value of the pound sterling to 4/-.
I respectfully submit that the 33% increase will benefit little owing to my very small pre-war pension of £164 per annum. I would still be 167% worse off than in pre-war days.
I came here on the advice of Dr. Watson of Ruchill Hospital, Glasgow, for health reasons and I now find myself stranded, without friends...
